Shark Attack Prompts Hua Hin Beach Closure

20 April 2018

A Norwegian tourist was attacked by a shark off Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin on 16 April, according to a joint statement released by Sophon Thongdee, deputy director-general of the Marine and Coastal Resources department and Pallop Sinhaseni, governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan.

After Werner Danielsen, 54, was bitten, military drones combing the sea spotted two five-foot long sharks near the coast. Doctors and biologists from the department of Marine and Coastal Resources say that a bull shark caused the man’s wounds. As a precaution, the beach will close for 20 days while a safety net is installed to prevent the predators from prowling the shallow waters.

Thon Thamrongnawasawat, deputy dean of Kasetsart University's fisheries faculty, urged people not to panic, saying that Thai coastal waters do not harbor dangerous species and the sharks filmed were young and harmless. He stressed that sharks form an essential part of Thailand's marine ecosystem and that attacks on swimmers are rare.
