Monarch to Sign Constitution

06 April 2017

On 6 April, King Maha Vajiralongkorn will sign the country's latest constitution.

Changes were made to six sections of the draft constitution after it was passed by referendum in August. Now, the king will be able to leave the country without appointing another regent. The new constitution is an essential step toward a general election planned for November, 2018 – the first such vote since 2014.

The country’s supreme law will come into effect upon its publication in the Royal Gazette. It will be the nation's 20th constitution since the absolute monarchy was abolished in 1932.

It is symbolic that the official ceremony is scheduled for 6 April, Chakri Memorial Day. The kings of the Chakri dynasty have ruled Thailand for more than 230 years.
